Many people enjoy the thrills of going on rides at fairs, carnivals and amusement parks. For some, the scarier the ride, the better. However, we assume that even though it may feel like the ride is out of control, we'll emerge safely. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Whether through a malfunction of the ride or the negligence of the people whose job it is to secure the riders, things can go horribly wrong.
Something did go very wrong on the evening of Friday, April 29, in El Paso, Texas, at a carnival being held in a church parking lot. One teenager is dead and another one injured. The girls were attending a carnival marking a holiday called Dia de los Niños at a local Catholic church. The three girls, who attended high school together, were the only ones on a spinning ride called "Sizzler" when the incident occurred. The ride whirls around a pivot in the center while riders spin in their seats.
Girl Who Died Hit a Metal Barricade
Two of the girls were ejected from the ride. The girl who died, a 16-year-old, reportedly struck a metal barricade. The other girl, a 15-year-old, was injured. The third girl remained on the ride.
The two injured girls were taken to the hospital. The 16-year-old died soon thereafter. The 15-year-old's injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.
Cause of the Accident Still Unknown
It's not yet known what caused the two girls to be ejected from the ride. However, the third girl who was uninjured had reportedly hooked her arms around a safety bar.
The "Sizzler" is owned by a Las Cruces, New Mexico, company called Playtime Amusements Inc. The company has not issued a statement about the accident.
When people are injured or killed on amusement rides, it can take some work to determine what people and/or companies can and should be held legally responsible. This is particularly true for one-night events or even fairs that take place over days and weeks where event organizers bring in rides and people to run them. That's why it's essential to seek the advice of a personal injury attorney who can work to determine precisely what happened and who was at fault so that victims or surviving loved ones can get the justice and compensation to which they're entitled.
