A manhunt has been going on in Orange County, California, since Sunday, after three inmates at a California jail escaped. The men broke out of the jail via a plumbing tunnel. The jailhouse is home to approximately 900 inmates and sits approximately 9 miles outside of Anaheim, the home of Disneyland.
Escaped Men Accused of Murder and Violent Felonies
Police say that the escaped men are dangerous and have been charged with violent crimes. The men include 20-year-old Jonathan Tieu, who was being held on a murder charge; 37-year-old Hossein Nayeri, an Iranian man accused of assisting in the torturing and kidnapping of a marijuana dispensary owner; and 43-year-old Bac Duong, who is facing attempted murder and other charges.
Up until Friday morning, the men were being held in a dormitory-style section of the jail. They escaped by cutting a steel grate in their dorm area. Then they climbed up a plumbing conduit until they reached the roof. Using a rope fashioned out of bed sheets, they dropped down four stories to the ground. No one has seen or heard from them since.
No Significant Leads in the Case
State, local and federal authorities are investigating some leads, but they admit that they have not received any significant clues regarding the men, nor have there been any sightings. They are currently investigating whether or not the men had help from non-inmates either inside or outside the facility.
Lieutenant Jeff Hallock described the escape as sophisticated, and the inmates had likely worked on it for weeks or months. He said that it was the first jailbreak since 1989 at the facility.
Being held in jail during criminal proceedings is bad enough. However, if an escape attempt is made, the accused person's situation will only get worse. If these men are captured, they will come back to criminal proceedings that are much more serious than they faced to begin with. For one, the escape will not paint them in a good light with regard to their original allegations. Secondly, the prosecution will have irrefutable evidence that the men did, indeed, commit the crimes of escaping from the facility.
