One person died and dozens suffered injury in a serious Las Vegas accident. The driver, a 20-something woman, deliberately crashed her vehicle into a crowd of people on Dec. 21 at approximately 6:40 p.m., not far from where the Miss Universe pageant was being held. The woman had her 3-year-old child in the vehicle with her at the time of the incident.
Car Hit the Victims Like a Bowling Ball
"The car was like a bowling ball and the human bodies were like pins," one witness said while describing the horrific and tragic incident.
Witnesses reported seeing people flying through the air after they were struck by the car. According to police, the woman drove up onto the curb multiple times before she fled the scene. Las Vegas Deputy Police Chief Brett Zimmerman says he does not know what the woman's motive was, but they do not believe it was terrorism.
Following the incident, police and emergency vehicles soon crowded the area as onlookers either gawked or took video with their cellphones. As authorities tended to the accident scene, part of the Las Vegas strip was completely closed down to traffic.
26 to 36 People Injured
Authorities believe that 26 to 36 pedestrians were injured in the crash. Six suffered critical injuries but they were later stabilized. The 3-year-old in the car with the woman was not injured. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save one of the victims who later died.
Authorities will likely hold the woman who deliberately caused this crash liable for her alleged crimes in criminal court. She may also be held financially liable in civil court by injured victims and family members of the deceased.
The crash happened as the Miss Universe beauty pageant was coming to an end in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino located close by. The winner of the pageant was a 26-year-old woman from the Philippines. However, before she won the award, a 21-year-old Colombian woman was mistakenly given the crown. She soon had to turn the crown over the other contestant.
