Female prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who helped her lover and another prisoner escape from a high security prison facility in New York last June, pleaded guilty in her criminal proceedings on Tuesday. The woman reached a plea bargain with prosecutors regarding allegations that she helped two convicts, David Sweat and Richard Matt, escape from Clinton Correctional Facility.

The 51-year-old woman pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge of criminal facilitation and one felony charge of promoting contraband in prison. Once sentenced, she could serve a maximum of seven years in prison.

Realizes That She Made a Horrible Mistake

The woman appeared in court on Tuesday morning wearing a black and white jail outfit and shackles. She was tearful while signing the legal documents associated with her guilty plea. According to the woman's attorney, "She realizes that she made a horrible mistake."
