U.S. safety regulators have pressured Ford into recalling almost 423,000 vehicles due to power steering defects. The defects could render the cars un-steerable while they are in motion. The recall covers specific model years of the Ford Flex, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and MKT, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan. Affected automobiles were manufactured from 2011 through 2013, depending on the model. The recall will only cover these vehicles located in North America.

Problem Relates to a Bad Electrical Connection

According to the automaker, an issue with the electrical connection could render the power steering inoperable. Basically, the power assisted steering will no longer operate and the steering will go into manual mode, which makes it very difficult to control the affected cars while they are in motion. At this time, Ford admits that four collisions were caused by the power steering defect; however, no injuries have been reported.

Depending on the specific problem related to the vehicle, Ford plans to update the power steering software in the affected cars or install a new steering gear.

NHTSA Began Investigations Last October

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating complaints relating to power steering problems with Ford automobiles since last October. The study reviewed 938,000 Ford cars from model years 2010 through 2012. It also looked at the Mercury Milan. According to NHTSA, it received a total of 508 complaints regarding problems with the power steering in Ford cars.

A class-action case filed last June alleges that more vehicles are affected by the power steering issue, including the Ford Focus.

In addition to this recall, Ford announced the recall of 19,500 2.3-Liter Mustangs from model year 2015. The Mustangs have an issue that could cause a leak in the fuel lines and result in a fire and damage to the vehicles' parking brakes.

It is extremely important for the safety of drivers and passengers that any owner of affected Ford vehicles take their cars in for the free recall repairs. Numerous motor vehicle accidents are caused every year due to the failure of owners to take the time to get their defective automobiles fixed.
