Car-bicycle accident

A 38-year-old man was arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon –- namely, his car –- after a road rage incident turned into car vs bicycle accident. According to witnesses, the bicyclist and the driver were shouting at each other just before the intersection of Taylor and North Point at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California.

The accident occurred on April 19 at about 1 p.m. The San Francisco police aren't sure why or where the altercation started; however, witnesses report the bicyclist was beating on the passenger's side window of the car. Then both men took off and the driver of the car, who is an Uber driver, struck the bike's rear wheel. The Uber driver did wait for police to arrive and was eventually arrested. The bicyclist, according to a captain with the San Francisco police, struck his face on the ground and may have been knocked unconscious. He is hospitalized with a broken collarbone and a punctured lung.

Witness Says Road Rage Happens Often at Accident Location

Road rage can often lead to vehicle damage, serious injuries and even death. One witness said that the cars and bikes are squeezed together at the location of this accident -– even though there is a dedicated lane for bicyclists. She said that she’s seen drivers get out of their vehicles, threaten other drivers or even fight. She also said that this happens very frequently.

Uber “Stands Ready to Assist”

Uber is a service that connects drivers with people needing a ride. There has been some discussion lately on who is responsible if an accident occurs when someone is using this type of service. It would seem in this case that the Uber driver is responsible, although the bicyclist may have some liability because of the road rage actions. Uber said they are still investigating what happened and will assist in the police investigation. They also said their "thoughts are with the victim of this terrible incident."
