Amy's Kitchen Inc. has announced the recall of almost 74,000 frozen pizza and frozen food cases due to the fear of listeria contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported the recall last Sunday. According to Amy's Kitchen, the recall was voluntary and it was triggered by news that one of its organic spinach suppliers may have sent them contaminated spinach.
The company feared that spinach used in its pizza recipes could be contaminated by listeria monocytogenes, which is known to cause listeriosis. Listeriosis is a serious foodborne infection that is extremely dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and people who have weak immune systems.
1,600 Listeria Infections Reported Each Year
Approximately 1,600 people contract listeriosis and suffer serious illness every year. Around 16 percent of these illnesses lead to death. Listeriosis has also been known to cause cervical infections in pregnant women that might lead to a spontaneous abortion or stillbirth.
California-based Amy's Kitchen creates frozen vegetarian and vegan dishes that are intended to provide a healthy option to grocery store shoppers who do not like to cook at home. The concept is simple: Put the frozen plastic carton into the microwave, wait five minutes and a hot and healthy meal will be waiting for you. The frozen pizzas are also convenient and all that is required is to put them in the oven and wait. To think that these products could be contaminated with life-threatening listeria germs is particularly unsettling.
Numerous Products Included in Amy's Recall
Amy's Kitchen made the costly decision to recall the almost 74,000 cases of products containing spinach "out of an abundance of caution." The recalled products were distributed to retailers throughout Canada and the United States. In addition to spinach pizzas, the recalled items include frozen veggie lasagna, enchiladas, veggie bowls, stuffed pasta shells and brown rice.
Any individual who fears that he or she has suffered serious personal injury, birth complications or illnesses relating to these potentially dangerous Amy's Kitchen products, may have a claim for financial restitution relating to medical costs and other damages stemming from the illness or injuries.
