Man Handles Asbestos-Containing Brakes As Part of His Job as an Auto Parts Worker
From 1965 until 1999, Gordon Bankhead worked as an auto parts worker. It was his duty to deal with vehicle brake parts manufactured by Pneumo Abex on a regular basis. According to a source, “Gordon Bankhead was involved in regularly inspecting, replacing, grinding and blowing out dust from the asbestos-containing brakes.”
In January 2010, Gordon Bankhead was diagnosed with mesothelioma. A year later, in October 2011, Bankhead lost his battle with mesothelioma and died at the age of 68. According to a source, Bankhead died “17 years before his life expectancy.”
Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Pneumo Abex LLC, Manufacturer of the Asbestos-Containing Materials
In June 2012, Bankhead’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against defendant Pneumo Abex, alleging that “Pneumo Abex knew of the dangers associated with asbestos exposure but suppressed information relating to the dangers and failed to properly warn Gordon Bankhead.” After a two-day trial and a two-hour deliberation by the jury, a verdict was reached on January 15. The jury awarded $6 million to Bankhead’s wife, and $2.5 million to each of Bankhead’s daughters.
What Is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that can be found in the abdomen (peritoneum), lungs (plurea), testicles (testicular), and the heart (pericardium). There are various forms of mesothelioma and it is typically caused by exposure to a fibrous, silicate mineral called asbestos. Asbestos has a history of causing severe health problems to individuals, including death. Both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have banned several asbestos products.
