Legal QuestionWhile most people are disgruntled about the recent government shutdown, there's at least one person who has already benefited from these unfortunate events.  Yes, none other than the alleged king of infomercials: Kevin Trudeau!

Who Is Kevin Trudeau?

If you are in the dark about who Kevin Trudeau is, it’s probably because you were fast asleep by the time he started pushing his weight-loss books on late-night infomercials.  As for the rest of you with insomnia you undoubtedly know who he is.  Some refer to him as the king of late-night television.

Trudeau has made thousands of dollars by pitching his weight-loss books on late-night television.  However, it hasn’t been all fun and games for the late-night infomercial guru.  He has been battling the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) since around 1998.  According to several sources, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) brought a lawsuit against Trudeau for making false and misleading claims in his infomercials and in 2010 Trudeau was fined $37 million for his deceptive ways.  This decision came after U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman ruled that Trudeau deceived viewers by pitching false and misleading claims in his infomercials about his book “The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About.”

So what does this have to do with the government shutdown you ask?  Keep reading…

How Has The Government Shutdown Assisted Infomercial Guru, Kevin Trudeau?

Trudeau owes the FTC $37 million, but claims that he is unable to pay the amount owed.  So obviously the FTC wants Trudeau jailed. That seems like a viable result, right?  Well not exactly.  Due to the government shutdown, the FTC hasn’t been paying their attorneys.  What this means is that there are no attorneys to ask the judge to put Trudeau in jail.  Looks like it’s Trudeau’s lucky day!

The infomercials gods are definitely on Trudeau’s side.

According to a news source, the voicemail for the lawyers of the FTC states that they can't respond until "the government ... resumes operation."
