Abortion LawCalifornia is one step closer to allowing abortions by nurses.  If the bill that was introduced by Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins passes, midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants would be permitted to perform abortions in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Which States Allow Abortions by Non-Physician?

Thirty-nine states require a licensed physician to perform abortions, while only a few permit abortions by non-physicians.  These states include:

  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • Oregon
  • Vermont

What makes this bill interesting is that more than half of California’s counties don’t provide “abortions providers.”  According to Atkins, the bill will help fill that void.  Atkins believes that this bill would provide all women with “access to reproductive health care regardless of whether they live in urban or rural areas and without excessive expense or travel.”

With abortion being such a controversial issue, this bill is sure to draw national attention.
