July 11, 1789- Congress created the U.S. Marine Corps

July 11, 1889- Tijuana became a city in Mexico

July 11, 1892- U.S. Patent Office said that J. W. Swan invented the electric light carbon for the incandescent lamp

July 11, 1921- William Howard Taft was sworn in as 10th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.  He is the only person to ever be both President and Chief Justice

July 11, 1916- The 1st federal grant-in-aid for state roads was enacted

July 11, 1922- The Hollywood Bowl opened on this day. The Hollywood bowl is a famous Los Angeles landmark

July 11, 1944- Franklin D. Roosevelt said he would run for a fourth term.  He is the only president to have served more than two terms

July 11, 1955- Congress made it mandatory for all U.S. currency to say "In God We Trust"

July 11, 1981- Neva Rockefeller became the first woman to be ordered to pay her husband alimony

July 11, 1984- Government ordered air bags or seat belts to be mandatory in cars by 1989
