In line with the recent news of Salmonella outbreaks, I wanted to inform the readers of this blog that the outbreak has also been linked to ground beef.  According to Huffington Post, “Federal health officials say at least 16 people in five states have been sickened by salmonella food poisoning linked to ground beef.”

5 States where 16 people were sickened by ground beef:

  • Michigan
  • Arizona
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Wisconsin

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “the cases have been linked to last week's recall of more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef from two Michigan businesses, Troy-based Gab Halal Foods and Sterling Heights-based Jouni Meats.”

Gab Halal Foods Ground Beef Recall:

On January 25, 2013, Gab Halal Foods issued a voluntary recall of approximately 550 pounds of ground beef products due to possible salmonella contamination.  These products were produced between Dec. 4, 2012, and Dec. 10, 2012 and sold to consumers at Gab Halal Foods.

Symptoms of Salmonella:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Fever

If you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Advice From The Food Safety and Inspection Services Regarding Raw Meat:

  • Safely prepare raw, fresh and frozen meat products
  • Only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160° F
  • Use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature to guarantee that the harmful bacteria in the ground beef is killed
