Various reports show between 58 to at least 90 teenagers in Iraq have been killed because of the way they dress, specifically those who dress in an Emo style.

Iraqi Militias Issue Hit Lists

Religious extremists have reportedly issued hit lists that give the names of people and their addresses along with a serious warning “to every male and female debauchee” that if they “do not stop this dirty act within four days, then the punishment of God will fall on [them] at the hands of Mujahideen.”

These hit lists and subsequent killings appear to have been fueled by a statement that was issued by Iraq’s Moral Police and was posted on the interior ministry’s website. The statement condemned the “emo phenomenon” and the government intended to eliminate the trend.

Emo Connected to Devil Worshiping or Being Gay in Iraq

The Moral Police in Iraq fear that emo is connected to devil worshiping, and emo is apparently also synonymous with being gay. The Quran forbids homosexuality so ultra conservative militiamen fueled by the religiously conservative society in Iraq have taken the law into their own hands and have bludgeoned and stoned to death teens and young adults.

What is Emo?

Emo is short for emotional and is a style of rock music that started out of the hardcore punk era in the 80s. It was known as “emotional hardcore” music and evolved its name to emo. This genre of music created a fashion subculture as well. Typically teens will wear tight-fitting jeans and studded belts, and often emo-culture teens wear their hair with long bangs swept to the side and often covering their eyes.
