Celebrities, professional athletes and other famous individuals have endorsed products for years. The money from these endorsements is usually substantial. Xarelto has recently been endorsed by Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh, comedian Kevin Nealon, pro golfer Arnold Palmer and NASCAR driver Kevin Vickers in television ads.

Billion-Dollar Drug

Bosh says in the ad, “When I was sidelined with blood clots in my lungs, it was serious. Fortunately, my doctor had a game plan.” That plan was a prescription for Xarelto, now a billion-dollar bestselling drug for Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 2012. Xarelto is part of a new generation of drugs that is trying to knock warfarin, also known as Coumadin, down from being a popular treatment for blood clots. Warfarin has side effects, including an increased risk of massive bleeding. That, however, can be treated easily at a hospital.

The popularity of Xarelto increased because the drug doesn’t require regular check-ins or restrictive diets. If massive bleeding occurs, however, there is no antidote available as with warfarin. The result can be uncontrollable bleeding if a patient on the drug is injured.

Thousands of Xarelto Lawsuits

There are more than 3,400 lawsuits across the country against Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals over Xarelto. The lawsuits claim that the patients' uncontrollable bleeding and even death, in some cases, is a direct result of the drug.

Many of those lawsuits will be heard in a federal court in Louisiana, as thousands of suits have been consolidated. Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ response to questions about the lawsuits was that people who take Xarelto have been warned of the risk of bleeding, as with any anticoagulants or blood thinners.

Bosh’s Story Without Happy Ending

The Miami Heat saw Bosh have a comeback season; however, the clots in his lungs have returned. He is taking Xarelto again. He now must watch the Heat in the playoffs from the sidelines because the risk of an injury during the game that could result in massive bleeding is too high.

What’s Your Risk?
