Weird New York City Laws

NYC Weird LawsAs many of you may already know, every Friday at LawInfo.com is dedicated to a set of weird laws from across the country.  Today’s “Weird Law Fridays” blog will focus on the “The Big Apple” and the weird laws that residents of New York City must abide by.  For example, according to one New York City law, it is against the law to dance in bars.  Say what!?

Obviously, some of these laws seem too ridiculous to be true, and I doubt that they are actually enforced today.  However, it is hard to deny that these laws do in fact have some entertainment value and that’s what keeps us wanting to learn more about them.

If you want to learn about other strange laws from New York, keep reading.  Enjoy these strange laws from “The Big Apple.”

It Is Illegal To Dance In Bars

New York City: This law is actually true.  In the 1920s the city enacted some cabaret laws to control the clubs in the area.  As years went on, some of these laws were revised and sometimes these cabaret laws weren’t even enforced.  However, during Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s New York City mayoral election of 1997, he brought the laws back.  He required that bars have cabaret licenses if they were to allow their patrons to dance in the establishment. According to the law, the club or bar must have a cabaret license if, "three or more people are found dancing" in the business.  Were you aware of this law?

It Is Illegal To Wear To Wear Masks At Public Gatherings

New York City: It is apparently illegal to wear masks at public gathering in New York City.  This law is a 150-year-old law and bans “mask gatherings.”  Halloween lovers must not fret! This law does not apply to masquerades and Halloween.

No Flirting In New York City

New York City: According to the alleged law, it is against the law for a person to flirt with another.  Breaking the law warrants a fine of $25.  A person who violates this law the second time, will apparently be forced to wear a "pair of horse-blinders" whenever he goes outside for a stroll. Ummm....?

Although some of these laws seem unfounded and obsolete, there must be a sensible explanation for their enactment, right?
