Judge Judith Sheindlin may find herself on the other side of the bench in the near future. The famous Judge is accused of purchasing a half-million dollars' worth of bone china and flatware for a drastically reduced price from her producer Randy Douthit. Who cares, right? Well it seems that Mr. Douthit is currently going through a (6 year) divorce and his (hopefully) soon to be ex-wife is claiming an equal share of the china and says Sheindlin conspired with her husband to purchase the items for well under fair market value.
Patrice Jones, the estranged wife of the producer filed the lawsuit against Sheindlin on Tuesday alleging that Hollywood Judge intended to deprive her of several items, a fish serving knife and sauce boat just to name a few. Jones and Douthit apparently filed for divorce back in 2007 but it has yet to be finalized due to ongoing issues, some of which stem from her 2011 notification of the discounted sale of the marital items.
Judge Judy recently commented to the Daily news "I have not seen any complaint by the former Mrs. Douthit, however, I don't owe this lady a cent. And if this 50-year-old woman would spend her time more productively at trying to find a job, instead of abusing the judicial system with frivolous lawsuits, we would all be a lot better off." Ms Jones’ attorney was obviously in disagreement with Sheindlin’s assessment of the situation saying "As a former family law judge, she knew that California is a (community property) state and that a spouse cannot sell community property without the written consent of both spouses and certainly not at 10 cents on the dollar."
The suit alleges that Sheindlin willfully intended to cause harm and injury to Jones and seeks to have the china and flatware returned along with an additional $500,000 in damages, although Judge Judy claims she has not been served with a complaint to date.
It will be interesting to see how the judge fares as a litigant this time around. Many of her fans and opponents know her for her brash ways and sharp tongue; perhaps she will change her tune after this experience….but let’s hope not, that will surely make for poor entertainment value and decreased ratings!
