Salmonella in Pet Food
Reports of pet foods contaminated by Salmonella seem to be ever increasing. The FDA has been doing a wonderful job in tracking harmful products and updating their site to inform consumers about what not to purchase. It always breaks my heart when I read about product recalls involving Salmonella in pet foods because of the adverse consequences suffered by the helpless animals. Therefore, I wanted to inform the readers of this blog of two new pet foods recalls due to Salmonella contamination.
1) Strippin’ Chicks™ Pet Treats
On March 7, 2013, Diggin’ Your Dog™ issued a voluntary withdrawal of one lot of its Strippin’ Chicks™ Pet Treats due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to the FDA, “as a precautionary measure, Diggin’ Your Dog™ will continue to produce all products in very small, handmade lot batches.”
Affected Product:
- Product Name: Strippin’ Chicks™ Pet Treats
- Size: 5 oz Bag
- Lot Code: 250322
- USE BY date: 2-23-14
Refund:
Consumers who have purchased the withdrawn products are entitled to a full refund, plus $1.00 to cover postage. All they must do is mail the UPC and lot code to the following address:

2) Canine Patties
On March 7, 2013, Steve’s Real Food of Murray issued a recall of its “Turducken Canine Diet Patties due to potential Salmonella contamination. According to the FDA, “the potential for contamination was noted after a routine sampling of one 5 lb. bag by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.”
Affected Product:
- Product Name: Turducken Canine Diet Patties
- Size: 8oz Patties in 5 lb. bags
- Lot Number: 209-10-27-13
- Expiration date: October 27, 2013
- Dates Of Distribution: From October 2012 to January 2013
- Places of Distribution: In retail stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York , California, Minnesota and Tennessee
Refund:
Consumers who have purchased 5 lb. bags of Steve’s Real Food Turducken Canine Recipe are entitled to a full refund. All they must do is return them to the place of purchase.

Risk of Salmonella to Humans:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal cramping
- Fever

Risk of Salmonella to Pets:
Pets with Salmonella infections may have the following symptoms:
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Lazy
- Decreased appetite
- Abdominal pain
If your pet displays any of these symptoms after consuming a product contaminated with Salmonella, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
What to Do if You Have Been Affected by a Recalled Product?
