Why Are Dialysis Products Such as Granuflo and NaturaLyte in the News?

Fresenius Medical Care, the manufacturer of Granuflo and NaturaLyte dialysis products, has been under legal fire as of late.  Granuflo and NaturaLyte are dialysis products used during the hemodialysis treatment phase of patients who suffer from kidney failure.

Why Were the Products Recalled?

In September of 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall of the Fresenius dialysis products when they discovered that Granuflu and NatuaLyte contain higher levels of bicarbonate than other dialysis products. Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall and may even cause death.  High levels of bicarbonate can lead to serious medical complications, including heart attacks and death.  Moreover, Fresenius Medical Care apparently failed to warn its consumers and doctors about the serious health side effects associated with the dialysis products.  Furthermore, they negligently manufactured and distributed the products while aware of its dangers.

Reported Granuflo and NaturaLyte Side Effects:

In addition to the risk of heart attack, several other side effects have been linked to the Fresenius Medical Care’s dialysis products including:

  • Metabolic alkalosis
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood oxygen
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Stoke
  • Death
