Laws That Make You Question Their Origins

Weird Laws

The following weird laws had me personally questioning what could possibly have led to these prohibitions. I have offered my thoughts as to their potential origin, but I welcome your thoughts as well:

• In Natoma, Kansas it is illegal to throw a knife at anyone wearing a striped shirt. I would guess that this one had something to do with pirates. Don’t ask me why, but that’s the first thing that comes to mind. My second guess would be some sort of issue with prisoners, such as when they were being transported and then people suddenly attacked them.
• In Nogales, Arizona it is illegal to wear suspenders. I wonder whether this one has to do with some sort of meaning that is imported with wearing suspenders. For example, in Los Angeles there was an association with a pinstripe suit and the “zoot suit” riots.
• In Mesquite, Texas it is illegal for children to have unusual haircuts. I am guessing this one has to do with a more traditional desire for a sense of conformity of appearance. There must have been some sort of wave of unusual hairstyles in order to get this one enacted into law.
