Pradaxa Lawsuits Update

The drug Pradaxa is an anticoagulant which is used to treat patients with an irregular heartbeat or atrial fibrillation. Although the drug’s manufacturer says that its product is safe for patients, it has admitted that the drug can cause serious bleeding and lead to death. On July 26, 2012, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) will hear oral arguments on a motion filed requesting that all cases in which victims have claimed that the drug Pradaxa has caused them to suffer from serious side effects or injuries, to be moved to one central federal court. The motion which was filed on May 30, 2012, is the result of hundreds of victims across the U.S. who claim that the drug has caused them to sustain various personal injuries, including heart attacks, strokes, and death. There are an estimated 500 Pradaxa lawsuits which will be filed against the drug’s manufacturer, Boheringer Ingelheim.

In October 2010, Boheringer Ingelheim began marketing the drug in the U.S. and in December 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to patients saying that it would investigate further the safety of the drug after it received an unexpected increase in in the number of injuries and deaths victims suffered due to taking the drug. Also, in 2011, the drug has been reported to be the leading source of all medications for the number of deaths and bleeding in which the FDA has received, according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
