Over the weekend a 28 year-old woman in Kunduz, Afghanistan was strangled by her husband and mother-in-law. The reason? She gave birth a few months ago to the couple’s third daughter and the husband was upset that she did not give him the some he had wanted.

The husband is a member of a local militia and is currently in hiding. The man’s mother was arrested, I guess he was not willing to allow her to go into hiding with him.

The woman’s name was Storai. The head of the Kunduz women’s affairs department was reported as saying that this was one of the worst she had encountered.

Violence against Women Common in Afghanistan

In November of 2011, a family was attacked and had acid poured over them because they refused to give their daughter in marriage to a man they deemed irresponsible. Later the man and his three brothers were arrested for the attack.

Foreign troops are set to be out of the country by 2014 and the worry is that women’s rights will be sacrificed. That statement is scary to me because they already appear to be sacrificed by my Americanized standard.

The Afghanistan President, Hamid Karzai, announced that he will hold a conference next month focusing on eliminating violence against women.

Do you think that the Afghan government is serious about stopping violence against women?

i can only hope and pray that it will happen. i honestly dont see it happening tho it has been going on too long without anything really being done. i am very sad for the young women that have to live in fear because some male deems what they have done said or look like is not proper.it is sad that it is allowed and that these people say it is right.
