Recall AlertNovartis Consumer Health, Inc. recently announced the voluntary recall of several different products because the products may contain stray tablets, capsules, or caplets from its other products, or contain broken or chipped tablets. Due to this error, consumers could suffer from incorrect dosing, take incorrect medicines, or potential allergic reactions due to unintended medications being taken. ALL lots of the following products have been recalled:

  • Excedrin (Exp. December 20, 2014 or earlier)
  • NoDoz (Exp. December 20, 2014 or earlier)
  • Bufferin (December 20, 2013 or earlier)
  • Gas X Prevention Products (December 20, 2013 or earlier)

These over the counter products were sold in various retailers nationwide. They were distributed to both wholesalers and retailers.

Consumers that have the product(s) subject to the recall should stop using the product(s) immediately and contact the Novartis Consumer Relationship Center at 1-888-477-2403 (available Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time) for information on how to return the affected products and receive a full refund.

For additional information, consumers should visit the company’s website at www.novartisOTC.com.

Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using these drug products.

This recall seems to be incredibly dangerous. Can you imagine thinking that you are taking a medicine to cure a headache, and then receiving a massive dose of caffeine instead? Also, the recall includes any and all lots of the medicines before a certain expiration date, meaning it is unknown for how long the manufacturing error has been going on. I hope the company comes forward with information for how such a massive oversight could have happened.

Powdered Infant Formula Update

While the CDC has not released any additional information since its publication in December, regarding the cases of four infants infected after consuming powdered infant formula, it has created a revised page with detailed information about Cronobacter bacteria in general, and tips for preparing formula to decrease the chance of introducing contaminants.
