A Cambodian court sentenced a U.S. doctor to 10 years in prison for paying for sex with two young boys ages 12 and 15 on Wednesday, according to an article on Msnbc.com.

After the boys informed their parents of doctor’s transgressions, the parents filed a formal complaint with local police in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Thereafter, police monitored Dr. Phillip Bruce Shepard, 69, which eventually led to his arrest and subsequent charges.

Shepard worked in a private clinic in Phnom Penh and had been under constant surveillance by a local anti-pedophile group since he was seen taking two boys into a private hotel room back in 2007.

The anti-pedophile group, Action Pour Les Infants (APLE), as well as local law enforcement officials are part of a movement seeking to rid the country of sex-offenders.American Doctor Arrested in Cambodia

Pedophiles have constantly been a problem in Cambodia because of rampant poverty and lack-luster law enforcement. As a result, Cambodia has been somewhat of a safe-haven for these pedophiles who feel that they can take advantage of impoverished kids without consequence.

It is good to see that the Cambodian people are beginning to take a stand against such atrocious acts. Furthermore, I hope that this case dissuades other pedophiles and child molesters from moving to Cambodia and stories like this continue to decrease in the future.

Finally, the court also ordered Shepard to be expelled from the country once he serves out his prison sentence. That is assuming the 69-year-old makes it through the 10 year sentence when his cell mates discover that he is a convicted pedophile.
