California created a Mortgage Fraud Strike Force in order to investigate the some 768, 330 foreclosures that occurred over the past four years.

Because Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae own so many of the foreclosed properties, or their underlying securities, they were served with Investigative Interrogatories regarding various aspects of their involvements and the status of the foreclosed properties.

The interrogatories cover issues such as criminal activity at foreclosed properties they own, compliance with California securities laws, compliance with California tax laws, presence of toxic materials, explosives, weapons and ammunition, or other fire hazards or health threats.

However, the questions went unanswered, thus in pursuance of her ability to enforce the Investigative Interrogatories, Attorney General Kamala Harris had to petition the court for their enforcement. It will be interesting to see where the answers lead, as the cases of mortgage and foreclosure fraud seem to be increasingly common.
