Doctor Conrad Murray was given the maximum sentence of four years in prison today. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this month in the overdose death of Michael Jackson. While Murray has stated that he “didn’t consider himself guilty of any crime” and has portrayed himself as a victim of Jackson’s drug addiction, the Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor admonished Murray, even saying that Murray had committed a “horrific violation of trust” while he cared for the Pop Star.
Overcrowding will Likely Shorten Murray’s Stay in Jail
The California Jail system is completely overcrowded, which will likely work in Murray’s favor. The sentence of four years could easily mean Murray will spend only half of that time. California is no stranger to overcrowding issues in the prison system and the U.S. Supreme Court has even made some controversial decisions regarding the release of prisoners.
The prosecution sought the maximum sentence for Murray due to the underlying greed that likely lead Murray to do whatever Jackson requested instead of maintaining the doctor role in the relationship. Additionally, the lack of remorse and responsibility Murray has displayed has left a bad taste in many people’s mouth. The defense argues that Murray is grief-stricken and emotionally distraught over the situation.
Jackson Family Wanted Justice not Revenge
The Jackson family prepared a statement for the sentencing and merely asked for Justice. I found it profound that the family was able to relay such wisdom in their statement, saying “[w]e are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back.”
The fact of the matter is that Murray was in the role of a doctor and not that of an employee. This situation should not have occurred under the supervision of a doctor. While nothing will bring Michael back, this sentence will hopefully serve as a stern warning for doctors willing to do almost anything for money instead of following the Hippocratic Oath.
