Most of us have heard of the drug Zoloft, commonly known as an antidepressant. Zoloft or sertraline hydrochloride is actually used for a variety of conditions, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Zoloft is manufactured by Pfizer

Pfizer, an American multinational pharmaceutical corporation, manufactures Zoloft.  Zoloft was approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression on December 30, 1991 and first  released for sale in the United States in February 1992 and it was the most prescribed antidepressant in 2007.

Side effects associated with Zoloft

While Zoloft comes with the usual side effects that are unwanted effects but are expected to happen, it also comes with unexpected and in many people’s opinion unreasonable side effects. Zoloft has been associated with birth defects when taken by pregnant women during pregnancy. The FDA even released warnings regarding Zoloft and its connection with birth defects. The birth defects include:

  • Heart Defects,
  • Clefts – Omphalocele and Craniosynostosis,
  • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), and
  • Delayed development
