The District Attorney’s office has apparently relayed to the court that Dr. Murray’s defense team plans to argue that Michael Jackson killed himself. While it is not completely clear what exactly killed the king of pop, it’s been heavily speculated that his death was caused by an overdose of Propofol (an extremely powerful drug that is usually only used in hospitals in relation to surgery). Dr. Murray claims that he went to use the bathroom, and while he was in the restroom, Jackson used a second syringe of Propofol which caused an overdose and his eventual death. 
What Will The Defense Allege?
TMZ is reporting that: “At around 10:50 AM, Dr. Murray gave Jackson 25 mg of Propofol from a 20 ml bottle — that’s only about 1/8 of the bottle. The dose Dr. Murray administered would keep someone asleep for only 5 to 10 minutes, but the Propofol, along with the Ativan and Versed that was already in MJ’s system, had a synergistic effect that put Jackson to sleep for a longer period of time.” At this point, the time-line gets a bit murky, Dr. Murray claims he only left the room to go to the bathroom, but the D.A. is going to argue that Dr. Murray left the room, and may have been involved in a cover-up (there are allegations he called his girlfriend and told her to move boxes from his medical offices as well as hiding of Propoful bottles). Dr. Murray’s attorneys will then argue after coming back from the bathroom, Jackson, in a fit of annoyance from not being able to sleep, self-injected himself and subsequently overdosed.
The defense is clearly trying to avoid the most serious charges by claiming that Jackson killed himself, but even if the facts were as Murray alleges, he could still be in trouble for using the drug cocktail on Jackson, for leaving a potentially deadly drug with Jackson, and various other minor crimes.
Types of Manslaughter
If Dr. Murray is found guilty of manslaughter, he would face serious prison time. There are 3 main types of manslaughter in California; Involuntary manslaughter, voluntary manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter. Here, Murray would likely face involuntary manslaughter charges based on his alleged “gross negligence.” If found guilty, Murray could face 2-4 years of prison time.
