The FDA is investigating the safety of LASIK surgery. Patients who have suffered complications from the eye surgery are urging the FDA for more oversight of the procedure. While most patients enjoy a successful correction, enough people have suffered injuries for the FDA to re-examine the situation.
You can read what the FDA has to say about LASIK eye surgery on the FDA website. The FDA is seeking information from experts and analysts about whether more information should be provided to prospective patients about the laser eye surgery.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates the sale of medical devices used in LASIK surgeries. Devices must be shown to be “reasonably safe and effective for a particular use” before the FDA will approve it. The FDA lists the approved lasers for LASIK on its website.
The FDA also publishes a checklist for both medical professionals and patients to use in evaluating if a medical device is designed or appropriate for your situation.

I had PRK surgery What an odd experience. But now I have fantastic vision. Though I have heard the horror stories. I was certainly worried when I went in and for the week or so it took for my eyes to recover. PRK is better for athletes, the eyes aren’t as vulnerable to damage as lasik.

Had lasik in 2002, PRK in 2006 and again in 2007. Last PRK made me completely farsighted +4.50 in both eyes. Constant pain also. Just had another PRK in right eye and slowly regaining vision, but still in pain. Scheduled to have left eye done 5/16. Pain and suffering has been unbeleivable. Received bad job review because I can’t see to do my work!

I had lasik Feb 2008 and it was also a very bad experience. Did you pay for yours? I got a loan and I’m refusing to pay. I disputed with the Lasik Vision Inst. and the place who gave me the loan - I also looked into legal help - they tell me I need to pay $60,000 for an expert witness. I have trouble driving, also pain and suffering and they told me to get it redone - which I refuse to do as I’m afraid it will worsen my eye pain.
