Feds bust job ring of European aliens

A federal grand jury has indicted six people on charges related to an illegal employee leasing company, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

One of the defendants, Jaroslaw Sawczuk, stood before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry S. Seltzer in Fort Lauderdale to hear the charges. He was arrested in Coral Springs and is expected to return to court on Monday for an arraignment.

According to the indictment, unsealed Tuesday, the defendants, some of whom worked out of Eastern Europe, arranged jobs for some 550 unauthorized alien workers on farms, dairies and factories across the United States.

According to the 63-page indictment, the defendants failed to withhold payroll taxes, including Social Security, or provide worker’s compensation insurance for the employees — instead pocketing close to $6 million that should have been paid to the U.S. Treasury.
